BLOG: Back to University as Tom Heeley starts his third year of lecturing

It is time to start my third year as a lecturer at the University of Derby on 23 September.

I have enjoyed it way more than I thought I ever would do and am looking forward to meeting my cohort of second year students this term.

I am teaching sports specific rehabilitation again on the Sports Rehabilitation BSC course.

It’s an all-practical module and that enables us to get really stuck in.

We are covering a wide range of topics too.

Equipment

We will look at how to test properly on the vast range of equipment that sports therapists like myself have at our disposal these days, as well as looking at what to use, and when.

We are obviously looking closely at rehab and I’ll be taking the students through the various stages of rehab in terms of early, intermediate, late and finally, return to play.

That rehab will take place through all sorts of exercises and tests like plyometrics, hopping, changes of direction, strength work, different reps and sets for different things. There’s a myriad of ways that a client or patient can rehab from whatever injury they may be suffering from.

Rehab

One of the reasons why I really like the course is because I can use my own real-life experiences of treating injuries and leading rehab to help and advise the students.

Having been involved in a variety of top-level sports like skiing, snowboarding, motor sport, football, cricket and rugby, I can call on plenty of experiences and lessons learned.

Those experiences can only help the students learn and I think that passing on of my knowledge is why I love lecturing so much.

If you are coming into one of my lectures, I look forward to meeting you soon.
